Triathlete to compete for homeless pets
Panama City, Fla. - A Cumming, Ga. woman with a soft spot for homeless pets will compete in this year's Florida Ford Ironman Triathlon on Nov. 7, 2009 to raise funds for the Humane Society of Bay County.
Nancy McMahon said she was "deeply moved by the downsizing that the shelter has had to take," when she was researching on the Internet for an appropriate charity to benefit."It touched my heart that these poor animals are being given up due to the economic crisis and that the shelter has had to downsize as well, but yet fights to stay afloat and remain a no-kill facility." she said. "I have always been involved with animal rescue and rehabilitation, and know in my heart that I am competing for a well-deserved organization," McMahon said.
Nancy was born in New England in 1969, and now resides in Georgia with her husband Michael of 13 years and their two children, nine-year-old Grace age and seven-year-old Grant. Nancy was a police officer for over 9 years with the Gwinnett County Police Department, and an avid equestrian until 2006 when she suffered a back injury during competition McMahon still rides for leisure and became active in the rescue and rehabilitation of horses that she takes to her farm in North Georgia.
Being an athlete has always been a part of McMahon's lifestyle. She bought her first gym membership at the age of 16, and has never quit working out ever since, she said. She trains six to seven hours daily, to ensure that she will have the endurance to complete in Ironman challenges.
"Having such a good cause behind me, will help keep me going the 140.6 miles I need to cover," McMahon said. "I predict I can complete it within 14 hours," she said.
